1st Annual RMAFP Practitioner/Banker/Vendor Roundtable Discussion

Topic:              Maintaining a Good Banking Relationship

 

Event Format:     Roundtable and panel discussion with practitioners, bankers and a moderator

 

Session Description:

One of the core duties of Treasury is managing / servicing the banking relationship between a customer and their banks.  This panel discussion will focus on best practices in maintaining that relationship despite the ups and downs of the economy, corporate restructuring, shifting industry focus, new banking fees, and even personality clashes.  Panelists will discuss what makes for good communications, solid product implementation, techniques for defusing tension, delivering bad news, and many other topics that come up in this relationship.  Audience members will be invited to participate by adding their questions and experiences.

Margaret has more than 30 years of banking experience managing Domestic and International Treasury Management and Deposit Services.   Currently, she is the Director of Real Estate Deposit Services for CoBiz Financial, a $3 billion dollar regional financial institution which operates as Colorado Business Bank and Arizona Business Bank with 18 locations in the two markets.  Previously, as the Director of Global Banking, Margaret managed the creation of an international banking platform of services for Cobiz.   She joined CoBiz in 2007 as the Director of Deposit and Treasury Management Services.

Prior to joining CoBiz, Margaret was the EVP and Director of Deposit Services for Guaranty Bank across their 36 bank enterprise in Colorado.  Previously, Margaret was a Senior Vice President  for U.S. Bank where she created and managed their Real Estate Deposit Services team overseeing $6 Billion in deposits throughout the U.S.  During her 21 year tenure at U.S. Bank, Margaret managed a number of functions including Domestic and International Treasury Management for a 4-state region.

Margaret currently serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee for the Japan America Society of Colorado.   She recently served on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the World Trade Center Denver.  She previously served as President of the Colorado Treasury Management Association (the predecessor of RMAFP) and on their Board of Directors for 6 years.

Bob has more than 20 years of banking experience, 14 with Vectra.  He graduated cum laude with a B.A. in Finance and a minor in Economics from the University of Minnesota.  Bob has earned the Certified Treasury Professional (CTP) credentials, scoring with distinction, and has served on the board of directors for the Colorado Treasury Management Association.  For the last 17 years, Bob has been a Relationship Manager focusing on complex depository and treasury management clients.  In this role, he is responsible for Vectra’s large treasury management relationships including municipalities, nonprofits and corporations. In addition to managing large depository relationships, Bob has been a branch manager and worked in the investment field.

 

Rafael Martinez-Chapman

Treasurer and Senior Vice President, Global Treasury and Risk Management

As the Treasurer and Senior Vice President for Level 3’s Global Treasury and Risk Management, Mr. Martinez-Chapman spearheads financing and balance sheet strategy and coordinates daily cash movements across Level 3’s global platform, as well as global risk management, including health, safety and environment efforts.  Mr. Martinez-Chapman joined Level 3 Communications, Inc. in 2008 after working for over a decade on Wall Street.

Prior to joining Level 3, Mr. Martinez-Chapman helped clients raise capital at top-tier investment banks.  Most recently, he worked for Wachovia Capital Markets (now Wells Fargo) advising clients and executing syndicated loans and high yield bond placements primarily for top-tier financial sponsors and Technology, Media and Telecom customers. 

He joined Wachovia after working in New York for J.P. Morgan’s Syndicated and Leveraged Finance department, where he joined after receiving an M.B.A.  Before entering business school, Mr. Martinez-Chapman conducted equity research at a then subsidiary of Salomon Smith Barney, The Robinson-Humphrey Company (“Robinson-Humphrey”).  During his tenure at Robinson-Humphrey, he was part of a two-member team that received All-Star Analyst honors by The Wall Street Journal on consecutive years.

Mr. Martinez-Chapman graduated with honors with a Bachelor in Business Administration in Finance degree from the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University and holds a Master in Business Administration degree with a concentration in Finance from the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he volunteers as a virtual mentor for The Carolina Latina/o Collaborative and is also part of the Alumni Career Advisor Network.

Kari has served in her current role as Senior Treasury Management Advisor and Vice President with UMB for ten years, with her banking career spanning over eighteen years. She holds a leadership role in developing sales and enhancing banking relationships with Public Sector, and Non-profit and Commercial organizations for UMB Bank.

Kari was the 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013 Regional Top Performer in Treasury Management Sales and 2010 National Top Performer in Treasury Management Sales, producing over 240% to goal for the year. She consistently exceeds sales goals and participates in strategic initiatives to develop business and grow a portfolio.

Kari grew up in the Denver area; a graduate of Bear Creek HS in Lakewood and studied Vocal Performance and music in Bolivar, MO. She holds a Business Administration degree from Colorado Christian University, graduating summa cum laude and is a member of the National Honor Society, Alpha Sigma Lambda. Embracing a Colorado lifestyle, Kari enjoys everything outdoors from biking to skiing to running.

Passionate about being an active member in the community, Kari served six years with the Rocky Mountain Association of Financial Professionals, most recently as Past President. She is an appointed Cultural and Scientific Commissioner with the Town of Parker, works on the Regional Council for the Denver Colorado Aids Project and is a Board Member with the Ray of Hope Cancer Foundation.
